Ottawa has plenty of good restaurants (especially in ByWard Market) and it’s a surprisingly diverse city. So, there are plenty of options; and if you are looking for Asian, then look no further than Gyubee Japanese Grill Gyubee is a Japanese style all you can eat grill, serving both Japanese and Korean style meats and side dishes. Gyubee originated in Ontario but has spread across Canada. We stayed in ByWard Market at the Andaz Ottawa ByWard Market, and Gyubee Japanese Grill was perfectly located across the street. And regardless of where you’re staying, you’ll likely be visiting ByWard Market so Gyubee is a must when you’re in the area.
Restaurant Structure
The dishes are actually predominantly Korean: Kalbi, Korean Brisket, side dishes like Kimchi and Bibimbap but they are cooked on a Japanese style grill right at your tabletop.
The restaurant is large, but it’s a good idea to make a reservation as it’s very popular. When you arrive, you get two hours. Appetizers, side dishes and meat are all unlimited. The meat is heavily marinated and brought to you raw; therefore, you cook it at the table. There are some cooked dishes you can order like chicken wings and Bibimbap which were both excellent. And when done you can order several types of desserts or just stick to ice cream.
Favorite Dishes
The food was excellent and it’s safe to say it might have been one of the best Asian restaurants/experiences I’ve had. The Prime Kalbi and Miso Beef Brisket were probably my favorites, but there was also short ribs, steak, pork belly and a slew of other meats. We ordered cooked chicken wings to start, but we also got marinated wings to cook at our table. And a big surprise was the lamb and salmon which were also up there with the Kalbi and Brisket for my favorite dishes.
The meats were flavorful, tender and the thin meats cooked the best and melted in your mouth. I used up most of my appetite on the meat but adding a bit of Kimchi, rice and Bibimbap added some variety to our meal and were delicious.
After the first hour I was in full blown food coma, but forced myself to keep going. By an hour and a half, I was done and despite the deserts looking delicious, I had no room in my protruding stomach.
Price and Service
For the amount and quality of food, the price was good. It costs $45 per adult and $20 per child which seemed good especially due to inflation. And despite the amount we ordered the staff continued to bring more without hesitation. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and authentic which complimented the high-energy Asian BBQ experience.
As I write this blog my mouth is watering and I’m wishing Gyubee expanded to my hometown of Winnipeg. When I come across a Gyubee in one of it’s many locations across Canada, I’ll definitely eat there again. The tender and flavorful meats make the restaurant a must in Ottawa or one it’s many other locations.
