When we were in York we met some friends for dinner. We wanted British food in the heart of York and they recommend The Star Inn. The chef is a Michelin Star chef, and the other Star Inn in Harome has earned a Michelin Star. In York the restaurant does not have a star but has excellent ratings and has won several awards.
We walked past the walls and entered and first we had a drink at the bar. The atmosphere was good and the modern décor was nice. The restaurant is also on the banks of the River Ouse and in the heart of downtown York, so the location is excellent.
After our drink we moved to the restaurant and decided what to order from the extravagant menu. We had a nice spot inside, but it would have been nice to be on the terrace with a view of the reiver. The menu is mostly modern British food/fine dining with an infusion of some Indian dishes. We were disappointed that we couldn’t get a Sunday Roast because like many places, it was only served at lunch. So we decided to order Yorkshire Pudding as an appetizer. The Yorkshire pudding was massive and covered in gravy… it was delicious.
For our main course I ordered the 8 Hours Braised Ox Cheek which was something I’ve never tried before. It was a fancy dish served mixed with gourmet veggies and gravy and on top of potatoes. It was tasty and the meat was super tender. The wife ordered steak which was good too. They didn’t have a kid’s sized fish and chips on the kids menu, but the server asked the chef and they made one up for our daughter.
Overall, the food was excellent; homestyle, hearty cooking but with a fancy spin on it. The atmosphere was good and the service was great, so all in all we had an excellent night at the Star Inn. Although, it’s a fancy restaurant, and things aren’t cheap in England, so it was a pricey night, but for fine dining and quality service, sometimes you need to dig deeper into the pockets. For anyone wanting fine quality dining and British food in York, the Star Inn is a must visit in the heart of the city.
