Places to eat in Roxas City

Filippino food can be good but if you don’t want food poison and want a tasty meal, you need to know where to get it.  Aside from home cooking for parties, there are some good places in Roxas City and the province of Capiz to eat.  Here is a list.

Bitoy’s

There are many restaurants lining Baybay Beach in Roxas City, but many of them are mediocre.  The place that the locals love, and that I loved after my first visit was Bitoy’s. I went back a second and wished I could have gone back a third. Pork Barbeque skewers are a staple in the Filipino food scene, and at Bitoy’s I had the best Filippino Barbeque I’ve tasted.  The skewers were packed with flavour and tender.  The tempura shrimp and buttered chicken (Filippino fried chicken) were also excellent.  Sinigang soup was good too.  The service in the Philippines tends to be slow, and at Bitoy’s it wasn’t any worse than usual.  There are many spots to sit with great views of the ocean too.

San Antoino Resort Kainan Village

I heard it  got rowdy here but the two times I was there I had no problems.  It is right on the beach, there is plenty of seating and a number of restaurants to choose from.  There is also music.  The vibe reminded me of Latin America.  When you enter the village, everyone will bombard you with their menus.  The first two restaurants got to me first and they looked the best.  The food and beer was cheap and the service was good.  Both places had excellent pork barbeque (not as good as Bitoy’s, but still good) and it was cheap.  I wanted to come back for a third time to try the seafood but unfortunately I didn’t get a chance.  The best part of hanging out in the village was the laid back atmosphere, having some beers, small snacks while observing the waves  of Baybay beach.

The Original Jeck’s Lapaz Batchoy

I was hesitant when I first stepped in, it is the typical dive restaurant; but it had a cool atmosphere and had a local Filippino vibe, so I gave it a shot. I wasn’t disappointed.  The Batchoy was tremendous.  I had Batchoy three times while in the Philippines and Jeck’s was the best.

SM Roxas City

Believe it or not, the malla in the Philippines are great places to come for lunch or dinner.  There are many snack shops and good restaurants.  In addition to a food court there are many good sit-in restaurants.  Blackouts are common in Capiz, and if you don’t have a generator at home you’re stuck without lights and air conditioning.  So where better to go than the mall?  Because of this the malls are really nice with plenty of good options for food including Mang Inasal.

Mang Inasal

Mang  Inasal is a franchise and it isn’t unique to Roxas, but it’s definitely a good option.  In addition to going to the mall there is at least one other location in Roxas City that I observed.  The Chicken Inasal (a marinated and tasty form of grilled chicken) is good and so is the java rice.  You also need to try the Sago Gulaman for a refreshing and uniquely Philippine drink.

Andok’s

Everyone knows about Jollibee for fried chicken and spaghetti, but have you heard of Andok’s?  They don’t offer spaghetti or fries, but the chicken is much cheaper and is on par with Jollibee when it’s fresh.  The Spicy Dokito Burger was really good and was fresh both times I went.  The second time the Spicy Dokito Chicken wasn’t very fresh though.

No Name on the corner of Magallanes and Bilbao Street

I’m not joking, there is no name to this restaurant or barbeque spot.  I asked the workers, and they told me it has no name just come to the corner of Magallanes street.  If you want some typical Filipino street food including grilled intestine, livers and chicken feet then it’s your place.  It was my first time trying this type of food, so I have nothing to compare it to, but surprisingly it wasn’t as bad as I thought and all the locals said it was the best.  They also have pork barbeque which was good and only 10 pesos per stick ($0.25 CAD).

Dapog Native Classic Brewing

This place isn’t in Roxas City it is actually in Pontevedra, but the two towns are close enough.  It’s hard to get good coffee in the Philippines and it’s also hard to get a good classic (non-Filipino) breakfast.  Dapog also offers Filipino style breakfasts but I got the ham and cheese omelet each time I was there and it was phenomenal.  There is a menu with some snacks, sandwiches and pasta too.  I only tried the ham and cheese omelet and the coffee, but if the workers put half the effort and care they put into their omelet and coffee, then I’m sure it’s good.  The owner is super friendly and the view from the café is great.  So if you want breakfast or lunch and are near Pontevedra, Dapog is a must visit.

Photos are in order as listed in the article, except I didn't take any photos in SM Roxas City or Mang Inasal.
